Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) Requirements
By-law 18.2 has been revised to strengthen the protection of the public, clients, and practitioners. The updated by-law requires all professional members, temporary licensee, and specified scope of practice licensee who engage in the practice of professional engineering and/or professional geoscience in Manitoba must maintain the same professional liability insurance as Certification of Authorization holders.
"Engaging in the practice of the profession(s)" is interpreted as providing services to the public, which includes activities such as offering engineering or geoscience advice, providing consulting services, or operating as a sole proprietor-even occasionally or for a limited number of hours per year.
National Secondary Professional Liability Insurance(SPLI) Program
All Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba members in good standing are automatically enrolled in Hub International's National Secondary Professional Liability Insurance (SPLI) Program. Engineers Canada manages this on the Association's behalf.
Some advantages to this program:
- Liability coverage: $250,000 per claim plus defense costs
- Aggregate per project: $500,000
- Advice and coverage for whistle blower situations
- Worldwide coverage
While the SPLI program offers valuable supplementary protection, it does not provide the full policy limits required by regulation. As such, it is best suited to complement, rather than replace, the primary insurance needed for regular professional practice (providing services to the public).
