Looking Back Through Our Century: January 1957 In
January of 1957, the Manitoba government announced a pay hike to ease the
shortage of engineers in the province. Salary schedules were under revision in a
move to hold present engineering staff and to attract others to fill posts in
the highways branch that had been vacant for many months. According to the
article in
The Winnipeg Tribune from January 26, 1957, the starting
rate offered by the provincial government to young engineers without experience
in the civic service ranged from $3,840 to $4,200 per year. A recruiting effort
was also underway in Britain to get engineers to come to Manitoba. Our province
and Association have a long history of welcoming engineers from around the
world. To learn more, see the

our Centennial Celebrations, we are inviting our members to give back to the
community by contacting their local school to offer their services to read to a
classroom during the month of February to celebrate I Love to Read Month. This
year's theme is "Books for a Better World." The theme encourages readers to
start taking steps towards creating a better world for everyone which works well
with our Centennial Celebrations where we will be highlighting a century of work
by engineers and geoscientists - making life work better in Manitoba. To learn

Engagement Sessions - Future By-law Amendments - Changes to Retired Member
Status - February 3 and February 12, 2020
Council invites all members to participate in an engagement session
discussing the requirement to address incongruity between our Act and Bylaws,
including By-law changes for 2020. Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba obtained
advice from legal counsel regarding the legality of retired categories of
membership. It was found that having retired categories is currently in
contradiction with the Act. Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba is currently
exploring options to eliminate contradictions between the By-laws and the Act
while still maintaining services for retired members. We are seeking input
from membership to determine the best course of action. For more information
and to register, please visit the
